New directors are usually handed a folder of policies and left to work the rest out in real time, in public, in front of the board. That's not fair to them, and it's not good governance either.
A real onboarding pack covers the constitution in plain English, the last two years of board papers, the current strategic plan, the financial position explained simply, and — critically — a straight conversation with the chair about what's actually going on beneath the paperwork.
Do this properly and a new director is contributing meaningfully within one meeting, not four.
If your association doesn't have this pack yet, that's this month's project.
