Sponsorship money and your association's independence

Every dollar of sponsorship comes with an invisible question attached: what does this cost us later?

Sponsorship keeps associations running. It also quietly shapes what a board feels able to say, recommend, or criticise — usually without anyone deciding that on purpose.

The associations that stay credible over decades are the ones with an explicit policy: what sponsorship will and won't buy, what independence looks like in writing, and a board willing to name the tension out loud rather than pretend it doesn't exist.

This isn't an argument against sponsorship. It's an argument for deciding your position before the money arrives, not while you're holding it.

If your board has never had this conversation directly, that's worth changing before your next renewal.
